BCCI handled over the Indian Team to Dhoni in 2007 for Short term Cricket Captain. As he was evoloved so much in short term cricket matches, BCCI decided to give Test captain to Dhoni. However MSD done so well in the Test matches.
Under his captaincy India Top into NUMBER 1 for the history of cricket. while MSD captained the Test Team. There were the Legend in the Indian cricket Team like Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Zaheer, Kumble.. etc.

After they retired from the Indian cricket, India really struggled a lot. Still Indian Cricket Team not founding the replacement for those Legends. Anyhow after they retired from TEST, India took newbie TEST players like rahane, pujara, dhawan, umesh, dinda, Varon Aaron, jadeja..etc
That is the time India were lacking in Test, since Everybody were new to the field as a test cricketer. However Msd maintained the Team upto his captaincy. there were many of series loss under msdhoni captaincy. MSD were in trouble

ONE GOOD THING:
The one good thing MSD did is, He was so consistent to picking the XI team in the Squad, By doing this, players got experienced and consistent form. If we look out the Team Squad now, we may proud to say we have the Good Team in Test cricket. This all credits should goes to MSD
